Students are expected to use their agendas for day to day home-school communication and to record daily reading.
Our days begin at 8:50. We Table Talk first thing every morning from 8:50 - 9:00. No one is allowed to sit alone so if we see someone sitting alone, we are expected to invite them to join or go and sit with them to chat. At 9:00 sharp we give our attention to 'Oh Canada' followed by a few school-wide announcements.
With the balanced school day we are working at literacy in both English and French during the first learning block. We work on numeracy in block two following a nutrition break and recess and we do inquiry or art after lunch in block three.
Students practice reading and writing skills every day using a Daily Five model. They may choose to work on writing, reading to self, listening to reading, do word work or read to someone else. They work independently and receive individual coaching to support growth in literacy.
During math, students work in small groups with a teacher or independently practicing their skills. The groups work for thirty minutes at each of two or three stations depending on the day. Students are presently improving their number sense and working on measurement.
In the afternoon, the students are working in cooperative groups, learning through integrated inquiry. They are working together to build awareness and understanding of concepts associated with Canadian geography and life in Canadian communities/habitats.
The class is beginning to understand basic conversational French and they use technology daily.
The students get physical in the gym with Mrs. Hunter every day. Mrs. Hunter also teaches the health program where students learn about healthy lifestyles.
Students enjoy Music on days 1, 3 and 5 and they visit the library on days 2 and 3.
